Excerpt
I thought of Lucas, an Elf turned long ago who was a member of the Elite Guard. He was the oldest vampire I 229 knew. I couldn’t imagine anyone thinking of him as weakening the gene pool.
“We will grow strong again,” he continued, his rich timbre conveyed a charisma that was hard to deny. It was an ability that made him a natural choice for the purists’ front man. “I propose a new system, ruled by one unswayable leader with a clear vision of the future and our true purpose. As your leader, I will rid us of the parasites who drain our society. I will unify and strengthen us and together we will realize the dream of our originator and eradicate the humans and impure forever.” He raised his glass to the mindless followers now whipped into a sufficient frenzy. Their passions were buffeting my senses and I held fast to my protective shields.
The crowd raised their glasses and spoke his name for the first time, “Miguel.” Miguel waved benevolently at his followers. I looked around me to see if I could recognize anyone else from our Nightshade group photo but was not so lucky. All I saw were a bunch of vampires who wanted free rein to kill humans and take out their frustrations on anyone different from themselves. Vampire society wasn’t that different from ours, I realized sadly. Immortality, it seemed, didn’t do a damned thing for tolerance.
This guy is pure poison. I spoke my mind to James without turning to face him.
He didn’t answer, his mind blocked from me.
About the Author-
HK lives in the frozen hinterlands of the far North. The long, cold months provide ample opportunity to hunker down with her computer and create adventures far more enticing than scraping ice and getting frostbite.
Between books HK reads voraciously. Anything with a good plot and compelling characters are her broad parameters. One is as likely to catch her with a copy of Don Quixote as with the latest Kristen Ashley.
When not writing or wowing the corporate world by day, HK practices martial arts, plays with her dogs and matches wits with her teen. Next winter she intends to brush up on her Spanish and escape the cold for somewhere more tropical.
