Summary
An epic, mesmerizing tale of tragic loss, the strength of words left unspoken, and the redeeming power of love. When she ran away from her childhood home in Guyana, Rika swore that she would never return. Cut off from her family, she has fought hard to make a life for herself and daughter, Inky, in London.
Now, over thirty years later, Rika’s cantankerous, wheelchair-bound mother, Dorothea, arrives in London. But as old wounds re-open, Dorothea and Rika are further apart than ever. Inky soon learns that her grandmother is sitting on a small fortune. As she uncovers the secrets of the past one by one, she unravels the tragedy that tore her mother and grandmother apart. But nothing can prepare her, or Rika, for Dorothea’s final, unexpected revelation.

My Review

The three protagonists of this story are wonderful women with a very strong character but very different from each other. Dorothea, Rika, her daughter, and Inky, her niece.
Inky is 18 years old,  was born and raised in London and had never visited the country from which is her mother, Guyana. Rika has not seen her mother for more than 30 years: she has run away from home very young and  since she is a proud woman has never apologized, so her mother. She married the wrong man: drunk, unfaithful, irresponsible. She is now widowed and in debt. Dorothea has always lived in Guyana, lately no longer self-sufficient, living on a wheelchair and her daughter Marion takes care of her. But now Marion wants to go live with her daughter who is about to give birth and she can no longer care for her mother. The other two sons of Dortohea have their wife too busy in their career to manage a nagging mother-in-law in a wheelchair. The only that can take care of her is Rika, her brothers will help her financially with the costs. Inky will see for the first time grandmother, her only grandma: she has never known, they have written letters only when she was very small but then their communications were reduced to  a Christmas card. Inky is hoping to finally find out what is the awful secret that it did quarrel mother and grandma so hard as not to see each other for 30 years. Another protagonist of the story is a family heirloom, a stamp that seems to be unique in the world ........

The characters are all realistic and very well characterized, both the main and secondary: in addition to the protagonists I am very fond of Freddy and Sal, I wish I had an aunt like Marion and a mother-in-law as  Ma Quint. Very exciting the idea of telling the story by jumping back and forth between past and present, and alternating the point of view of three women. Most of the story is told in first person by Inky and other parts are from the point of view of the mother and grandma but are written in third person. There is Dorothea teenager in Guyana colonized who fight for the rights of black people. Rika girl in the 60s in the post colonial Guyana and finally Inky teenager in modern London.
I loved everything about this novel: the plot, the places, the characters, the cover.
It 's a sweet romance, romantic, exotic, about family and forgiveness.
I want to thank the author because thanks to this book I got to know and "visit" a great nation that  I didn't know.

I received a copy of this from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for honest review.

The true story behind the novel

The British Guiana One Cent Magenta stamp recently sold for a record-breaking £5.6 million at a New York auction by Sotheby’s – making it the world’s most valuable object by weight and size.
For Sharon Maas there is a personal connection to the world’s most famous stamp which bears the initials of postal clerk Edmund Wight, also her great-great Grandfather. His role in its genesis inspired her to write a novel, which was signed by Bookouture as part of a twobook deal. Sharon says:
“Growing up, the story of the innocent signing of a stamp that would go on to earn a fortune always fuelled my imagination. What if another one of those stamps survived within the family, I asked myself; what if it turned up in one of those drawers I used to burrow through as a child? Those ‘what ifs’ never left me and, after the publication of my first three novels, it became the inspiration for a story in which just such a stamp turns up – a family heirloom worth millions. The Small Fortune of Dorothea Q is the result”

Rough Edges
by Kimberly Krey

 Divorced mother, Allie Emerson, never imagined she’d be raising two teenage girls on her own. Between parenting and paying the bills, she hasn’t even thought about meeting a man. That changes once she hears local carpenter, Braden Fox, is in need of a secretary. Back in high school, Allie had done all she could to deny the sparks burning between her and Braden; perhaps now they could explore the possibilities. Braden has heard all about what Terrance did to Allie and the girls, has been planning to stop by and see how she’s getting along, but Allie beats him to it by showing up at his shop in search of a job. Her single visit reignites the old flame Braden used to torch for her; trouble is, old feelings of resentment return as well. Allie did choose Terrance over him, after all. And as much as Braden wants Allie in his life, he’s not sure he can open his heart again. With this second chance at romance, will the bumps in their relationship be too much to get over, or will this carpenter learn to smooth out the past?

 Their eyes met once more, and a shot of heat flooded his chest like a liquid bolt of lightening, forcing his pulse to rush. “I’ve missed you,” he blurted. Her eyes widened in response, and Braden wondered if he’d been too bold. He’d hardly meant to speak it. It’d been more of a thought. A longing, really. At last she nodded. “Yeah,” she said, her voice soft and low. “I … I’ve been wondering about you too. How you’ve been over the years. I kept asking Terrance who you were dating. If you were close to marrying anyone…” Her words drifted off for a breath, but then she spoke up again. “You admitted that you’d turned down our offers to come to dinner and catch up.” She studied him for a moment, a challenge presented in her gaze. “All those years. Why didn’t you just come?” “You know why.” He’d nearly spoken over her, but he couldn’t help it. “No, Braden, I don’t.” He nodded adamantly, taking a step back and folding his arms. “Think about it, Allie.” ... “I have thought about it –” “Not nearly enough, apparently,” he snapped. “I’ve thought about it all these years. It hurt my feelings. I thought we were friends.” ... Braden bit back his words and broke into a pace. “Braden,” she said, “I wanted you to stay a part of our lives. You were the best influence Terrance had and you just stopped being his friend? Why would you do that?” Braden froze in place. “I was a better friend to him than you’ll ever know.” Or possibly the worst, he realized. He strode back, his gaze set on her. “And I didn’t want to be your friend, Allie. I wanted more than that and you know it.” Her face fell flat. Her lips parted. But no words came. She cleared her throat, casting her eyes to the floor. “Yeah,” he said. “Don’t pretend that you don’t know. I made it clear. And as soon as I did you started setting me up with every friend you had. Including Kayla.” “That’s not…” Her face flushed red. Her lips tightened. “That’s not how it went, Braden.” The silence that followed was painful. The tension wedged in each passing second pressed at Braden’s last nerve. “Well,” he said, “this has been a nice trip down memory lane, but if you don’t mind I’ve got to get back to work. Come on out when you’re ready.” He turned away from her in one quick jerk and walked out of the kitchen, one long stride after the next.

Except Tour: Ember's Center by Jillian Jacobs

Ember’s Center
by Jillian Jacobs

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
She spent her life fighting for middle ground, and now that she’s found it, she’ll fight for her life.
Ember Brooks yearns for an end to the dark chapters of her life—abusive mother, negligent father, teenage trauma, and sibling suicide. Determined to escape her traumatic past, Ember is finally headed for solid ground, gathering strength and balance with the help of her trusted counselor and friend, Xander Kane.
Still reeling from the death of her brother, Ember finds solace when Manchester Marauders center, Owen Killion goes on the offensive and barrels into her life. Both on the football field and off, Owen is sure-footed and confident. With his domineering presence and reliable nature, he alters her game-plan. But for a girl continually left on the sidelines, can she leave her heart on the line?
When Ember is the victim of increasingly dangerous incidents, and Xander changes the course of their relationship, once more her life spirals out of control.
Ember trusts Owen to guard their love, but when someone else is calling the shots, can they reach the end zone or will they fumble?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

Not comfortable around men, especially huge, handsome ones with square jaws sharp enough to cut ice, Ember calmed her breathing and tried stilling her pounding heart. The Marauders’ center stood in her cube entry.

Her entry. Oh no! Where has my mind strayed?

Did he live up to the rumors? The “O” in Offensive-line raised many a woman’s curiosity across social and traditional media platforms since all the players were extraordinarily gorgeous. Not hard to imagine Owen’s reputation for bedroom proclivity was very accurate since his shoes were so big, which meant he was big everywhere. Ridiculous. She would not stare there.

Maintain eye contact. Keep it!

Review: Don't Say No by Naomi Bellina

Don’t Say No
by Naomi Bellina

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Mixing business with pleasure has never been so much fun.
Amber’s life sucks. Her ex got her thrown out of college, then fired from her job. When she’s hired for a mystery shopping assignment, she hopes this is exactly what she needs to kick-start her life and get her back on track.
Jaeger is all business when he hires Amber to check out the spa he’s purchasing. If she can help him prove that the venture will be a success, then he can build his own future, not the one his family has mapped out for him. Becoming attracted to his sexy spy isn’t part of the plan.
Amber can’t see how she fits into Jaeger’s world, and he’s too uptight to ever fit into hers. Circumstances bring them together, in bed and out, but when a secret from his upper-class life is revealed, Amber must decide if she can trust him. Or is her life going down in flames all over again?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My review:

The beginning is really exciting: Amber's ex-boyfriend, Randy, is presented at the cafe where she works and is fired. She is furious and throws everything, destroying almost local. Jaeger comes to her rescue. He offers to pay damages if she is summarized but the manager does not want: the excuse that it was expected to kick her, could not see her. Jaeger offers her a job at Wilson Enterprises, his company, or rather of his family. He's trying to make the perfect Bella Sun, a spa. She should do a mystery shopping assignment: she has to pretend a customer to control the quality of staff. After a while hesitancy she accepts. Getting paid to have a massage or a manicure you can not refuse. After the first day she had the brilliant idea to get hired as a laundry lady: it is the best way to spy on employees of the spa. Jaeger is increasingly fascinated by Amber but wants to keep the relationship on a professional level, because she sees too involved with ex-boyfriend. Will he do it?
Amber is a sunny person, always in a good humor and with a effervescent personality. She immediately caught the attention of Jaeger. She lives with her mother who has never recovered from the death of her husband and Amber is determined not to go the same way. She's persecuted by former boyfriend Randy: because of a stupid joke were expelled from school attending and she hates him for that. But when they were together they traveled for two years and they loved it. Randy knows her very well, knows what her weaknesses and exploit them.
Jaeger is a nice guy, sweet and intelligent, who wants to prove to his family, especially the older brother, of his professional capabilities. His idea is to succeed otherwise he expects a small office in the cold Chicago.
It 's a quick and engaging story, at times very funny.

                                                                     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Her phone rang, and she moaned. What the hell was the matter with that man?
“What? I'm tired. Leave me alone.”
“Just talk to me for a minute. What did you find out?” he asked.
“I found out doing laundry all day sucks and makes you want to come home and lie on your bed in your underwear. Oh, something else startling. Nobody likes to work for a living. Ha-ha!”
There was a moment of silence.
“Are you okay?” Jaeger asked.
She sighed. “I'm fine, just really tired. The good news—no one talked too much trash about the spa, but they don't like Carla and they're not really happy. Not having a lot of fun at work.”
“That's why they call it work. It's not supposed to be fun.”
“It could be. It should be. Why not? I bet the clients would enjoy their visits more if the spa girls were happier. The employees would get bigger tips, which would encourage them to work harder. Everyone's just kind of doing their job, not putting any love into it, you know?”
Jaeger laughed softly, a warm, sexy sound that slid through her senses like water flowing in a stream. A pang of desire shot through her, and her nipples tightened.
“So that's what they should be doing, putting love into the job?”
“Yeah, they should. Are you making fun of me?”
“No, not at all. In fact, I kind of like that expression.”
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
I love spas! Even as an employee at several, I've always enjoyed the relaxing, pampering atmosphere in a place that's designed to be all about feeling good. This book is a work of fiction and most of the craziness that went on at Bella Sun doesn't really happen at spas. Mostly. I like to think there's always a romance or two going on behind the scenes. I've also been a mystery shopper, though I never received spa treatments on any of my assignments. Some girls have all the luck!
I hope this book encouraged you to not only search for your own true love, but to follow your dreams, no matter how many setbacks you encounter.
Grabbing her roughly by the arm, he hauled her back until she was flush against him, her back to his front.  Grinding his erection into her ass, he lowered his lips to her ear.  “You think you can push me like that and I won’t respond?” He taunted, nipping her ear painfully.  She let out a low moan, her body beginning to betray her.
“You’re mine.  I won’t share you, and I’ll be damned if I let anything happen to you, Gwyn.  The sooner you get it through your head that I own you now, the better.”  His hand trailed down her body, cupping her aching pussy through her shorts.  Feeling her heat, he groaned.  Dragging them backwards, he hit one of the tall trees, his hands coming up to brace her shoulders.
“Brady, please,” she begged.  Her body was a slow fire, desire taking over every part of her being.  This man and his fierce possessiveness of her awakened a darkness in her she didn’t know existed.  He pinched her nipples roughly through her thin shirt, her back arching against him.
“You want my cock, sugar?  Right here out in the open?”
Excerpt
By the time I’d finished a very poor attempt at studying for an Art test and exited the library, the tell-tale signs of pending dusk had crept onto Winston’s manicured campus. The early November air felt crisp against my cheeks as it whisked through, rustling the leaves and sending several pirouetting to the ground to land in scattered colors on the grass like some strange abstract stained glass. Knowing darkness would soon swallow everything, I hurried to the campus coffee house and café that stayed open until midnight. Inside, students sat at tables studying, their laptops open, the light illuminating their faces and coffee cups by their sides. As I took my place in line I selected my usual pre-packaged turkey sandwich and a bottle of lemonade and stood, waiting to pay.
    “That’s all you’re eating?”
    I jumped at the voice behind me and turned to find Kane there. Instantly, my insides froze. He gazed down at me, his hands shoved into his pockets, those broad shoulders sort of hunching toward me, almost…cornering me; his eyes as worn and soft as the leather jacket he wore.
    “Um, yes,” I answered. I gave a hesitant smile. “Not very hungry, I guess.” What was he doing here? Suddenly I felt closed in—a feeling I avoided at all costs.
    “So what’s good here?” he asked. His Boston accent was heavy and void of the letter r, just like Brax’s, only…softer. Quiet. The kind of voice that you had to pay close attention to or else you’d miss what they were saying completely.
    I couldn’t believe he was talking to me. I shrugged, pretended he didn’t bother me, and held up my sandwich. “Turkey?”
    He said nothing as he lifted three turkey sandwiches from the cooler; his smoky gaze remained riveted to mine. Then, he bent his head close. “Kane McCarthy.”
    I looked at him then, taken back by how his voice washed over me and made my skin tingle. I forced myself to breathe; I wasn’t used to being in this kind of situation. Guys just didn’t go out of their way to talk to me. I made sure of it. But I didn’t balk. I mean, after all—Kane was my potential reformation Dare. Right? Murphy’s words rushed back to me. Reform the barmy beast! I breathed. Smiled. Pretended. “Harper Belle.”
    Again, his eyes softened, and as we stepped up to the cashier he gave her a nod and inclined his head toward me. Before I could say a word, the cashier had rung our orders up together, and Kane handed her a twenty.
    I looked at him, embarrassed. “Oh no, really, that’s okay, you don’t have to—”
    Kane’s eyes moved over me. “Yeah,” he said quietly. “I do.”
