One woman’s
struggle to fight back against the enemy in order to protect the ones she
loves.
When Arlette Blaise sees a German plane fly over
the family farm in 1940, she’s comforted by the fact that the occupying forces
are far away in the north of the country. Surely the war will not reach her
family in the idyllic French countryside near to the small town of
Oradour-sur-Glane?
But then Saul Epstein, a young Jewish man driven
from his home by the Nazis, arrives at the farm and Arlette begins to realise
that her peaceful existence might be gone for good …
My Review
It was a very compelling, interesting and sometimes dramatic reading, set in the period of German occupation in France. As soon as you start reading, you immediately become attached to Arlette, Francine Henry, Gilbert, Saul and you can not get away from the pages.
Arlette lives in the south of France and works in the countryside with her father Henry and her brother Gilbert. Her mother died when she was a child. Their life is quiet despite their country being at war. France signs the armistice with Germany and is the end of their tranquility and security. They receive continuous visits from the police, confiscate the harvest, suffer verbal and physical violence. Gilbert doesn't accept it and leaves to fight with the resistance. So they need help on the farm and arrives Saul, a young and charming Jewish man who is immediately in tune with Arlette. But the Nazis occupy their home .............
Arlette is a strong, loyal, courageous woman, very attached to her father and brother. The author has been very good to make us participate in the various emotions that the characters feel during the story: fear, love, joy, pain. And the Blaise family has been very strong, despite fear and hunger has never given up their principles.
It's wonderfully well written, very engaging, realistic and full of emotions: there are moments very sweet and romantic, others hard and heartbreaking.
Highly recommended, a truly brilliant and exciting story from the first to the last page.
