BLURB:

In a devastated country, those in charge rule by fear, inequality, and oppression. Rhia, a strong and independent sea captain, just wants to keep her head down and do her job, unitl she finds herself trapped in a re-education facility designed to help people fit into the rules of the New Way Forward. The warden claims to be guiding those in her care, but Rhia quickly sees the cracks in the system. As she is faced with torture and brainwashing, those cracks become gaping holes that threaten to pull her down into the depths of despair. Can Rhia resist the slow subversion of re-education and become the reluctant hero the new world needs?

RUN Ragged is the thrilling second story by the award-winning author of Women’s Work. This brilliantly imagined novel is both a scathing satire and a profoundly poignant look at the price we are willing to pay for peace and what we are willing to ignore to keep our conscience clear.

EXCERPT:

“There’s been a mistake. I’m not a criminal. I was washed overboard in the storm a few nights ago, and my boat is sitting out in the water right now. If I could just—”

“I understand your frustration, Ms. . . .” The nurse checked the screen in front of her. “Ms. Malone. But I’m afraid I have no power in this matter. I just admit people. You’ll have to talk to Ms. Tumwater. She’s the justice liaison for the region.”

“Okay, then let me talk to her.”

The nurse smiled. “Ms. Tumwater’s only here on Mondays, so I’m afraid you’ll have to wait.”

“Today’s Monday.”

“She’s already left for the day.”

“What? I’m not going to stay locked up here a week waiting for—”

“I’m sorry, dear. As I said, there’s nothing I can do.”

Rhia’s jaw dropped. “Who’s your supervisor?”

“Miss Deacon is the warden of this Center.”

“So get her.”

“You’ll meet her tomorrow. Now please have a seat.” The nurse turned back to her screen.

“I haven’t done anything wrong. You need to let me—”

“Ms. Malone,” the nurse said in a stern voice. “Please don’t make me call Captain Banks back in here.”

Giving up, Rhia turned in a slow circle and looked around the entrance hall. In the middle of the east wall, near the row of rocking chairs, were closed metal double doors with thick glass peep windows three-quarters of the way up. A carved wooden sign above the doors read To Wards. A heavy silver metal handle in each door held a deadbolt and a lock. Two more doors stood in the center of the west wall, to the right of the reception desk. A similar sign above them read Offices, Treatment Rooms, and Facilities. The doors to the west wing were made of dark oak, but had the same industrial-looking metal handle as the eastern doors.

Her jaw clenched tightly, Rhia looked out the front door. The truck was still parked in the drive. The hot air in the hall was stifling, her body ached, her lip was swollen, and she was filthy. Completely overwhelmed and exhausted, she resisted an urge to simply lie down and rest on the cool cement floor beneath her feet.

“Okay, ladies. Someone will be right up to help you.” The nurse went to sit back down on her stool, but stopped when she saw Carol hunched forward in her chair, her back shaking with silent sobs. The nurse smiled kindly once more and said, “Don’t worry, honey. It’s going to be all right.”
