There
is little hope for sanctuary in the midst of the tumultuous Scottish border
wars, yet one woman may find safe refuge . . . in the arms of her sworn enemy .
. .
Jennet Graeme has witnessed terrible
tragedy during the many years of strife between the Scots and the English. As
Scottish invaders plunder her convent sanctuary, she defiantly resists the
blond warrior who claims her as his prize. But his brute strength is overpowering
and Jennet is forced to ride with him through the lawless lands, tending to the
wounded, protected and desired by a man she wants to hate . . . but cannot . .
.
Sir Hacon Gillard is moved by
Jennet’s compassion and mercy. As a loyal knight, he’s pledged fealty to his
king’s command, even as he loses his heart to this remarkable woman. Merciless
in combat . . . yet there burns within him a spark for something far beyond the
heat of battle…
My Review
I like so much historical novels set in Scotland, especially in this historical period so I really loved this novel. It was so well-written and engaging that has hooked me from the first page, it was really difficult to put it down.
It sets in the early 1300s. Robert "The Bruce" has just returned from exile. He believes to be the rightful king of Scotland and begins a fierce war against King Richard. His men are unscrupulous and will get more success than was expected. Jennet Graeme believes to find a safe haven in a convent but men of "The Bruce" do not respect anything or anyone. They assail the convent where she hid and ends up being taken hostage by Hacon Gillard. The orders were to kill all the nuns but he can't do it,can't hurt this girl and only takes her as hostage. She will travel with him through Scotland and England, and attend some of their brutal looting. But soon discovers that the man who has saved her is a knight good and generous, with his kindness will win her heart.
This historical novel is very well developed, rich and complete: it is romantic, full of action, adventure and also has several funny scenes.
This was my first time reading a book by this author, and I can say with complete certainty that it will not be my last!
I recommend it to those who love medieval novels adventurous and romantic.
