Review: Clara's Song by Kitty Margo

CLARA'S SONG
by Kitty Margo

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Clara was born with a veil, and the ability to see into the future. This much she knows. What she doesn’t know is what other gifts will be revealed when she turns eighteen in a few months. While her grandmother has been diligent in her efforts to prepare her for the inevitable changes to come, Clara can focus on precious little besides the devilishly handsome man she met at her coming out ball. Secure in the knowledge that she has a bright future ahead of her, the future Clara discovers is one that she could never have conjured in her wildest dreams.
EXCERPT:
Chapter One
Charleston, SC
August, 1861
By midnight at Hibernian Hall Clara had danced six dances. Joseph Gibbs had tripped on the hem of her skirt, bless his heart, and ended up on his knees as if seeking divine intervention for just one night of social grace. Leland Montague had simply atrocious breath; evidently he had an unseen rotting tooth, making her continuously look the other way for a breath of fresh air. Walter Wragg didn’t speak a word during the entire dance, blushing profusely when she so much as looked him directly in the eye. Albert Tradd held her entirely too close, causing her father to intervene and have a few choice words with the young dandy on the balcony. Ashby Calhoun, her last dance partner, had bragged incessantly of his family’s wealth, his travels abroad, and what a great catch he would be for any of Charleston’s Southern belles.
Her coming out ball certainly was not turning out as planned.
Clara shuddered at the mere thought of being trapped in a loveless marriage with the offerings thus far. Spinsterhood had never looked more tempting.
My Review:
Clara Mae Jordan was adopted by Joshua and Lynna Jordan after her grandmother died: they adored her, just as if she was their own daughter. Clara isn't a simple and ordinary girl, she was born with special gifts: can live up to 300 years, see dead people, talk to a person miles away through the flame of a candle, see the future .... In a few months, when she turns 18 years will come into full possession of her gifts. On the evening of her debut in society, she knows a wonderful guy, Will Willoughby. He's the grandson of the richest woman in Charleston. During their dance they understand to be attracted to each other. Will wants to reach the Caribbean and the Jordan family is just about to leave for Jamaica and Trinidad. They have to talk to Doc Buzzard, a shaman with the same powers of Clara that will help her. They also want to leave South before the outbreak of a war (it set in 1861) Will want to escape because his aunt wants him to marry Penelope, the richest girl in the city: their parents are very happy because this union would pool their assets but Will decides to give up the marriage. Penelope attacks very hard Clara who still doesn't know how to manage well her own gifts, in front of Will shows her powers and unintentionally injuries Penny. The boy is frightened but decides to leave with Jordan's ship for the Caribbean. Will she be able to live peacefully her gifts? Find someone who will be able to love her and not to be afraid of her?
Clara is  very sweet and gentle struggling with her first true love. She's very hurt by the stupid attitude of Will and hates her powers, especially immortality, having to survive the people she loves. In the beginning Will is charming but, after he has discovered the powers of Clara, his attitude  is irritating. The other members of Jordan family are amazing: her father is very protective, her mother is very tender and the kids are funny.
It 's very well written, engaging, it had me hooked from the first page. I can't wait to read the next book ....
Must read for those who love historical and romantic novel
