About the Book

Nina Redmond is a literary matchmaker. Pairing a reader with that perfect book is her passion… and also her job. Or at least it was. Until yesterday, she was a librarian in the hectic city. But now the job she loved is no more.

Determined to make a new life for herself, Nina moves to a sleepy village many miles away. There she buys a van and transforms it into a bookmobile—a mobile bookshop that she drives from neighborhood to neighborhood, changing one life after another with the power of storytelling.

From helping her grumpy landlord deliver a lamb, to sharing picnics with a charming train conductor who serenades her with poetry, Nina discovers there’s plenty of adventure, magic, and soul in a place that’s beginning to feel like home… a place where she just might be able to write her own happy ending.

All About Romance

Excerpt from THE BOOKSHOP ON THE CORNER:

The problem with good things that happen is that very often they disguise themselves as awful things. It would be lovely, wouldn’t it, whenever you’re going through something difficult, if someone could just tap you on the shoulder and say, “Don’t worry, it’s completely worth it. It seems like absolutely horrible crap now, but I promise it will all come good in the end,” and you could say, “Thank you, Fairy Godmother.” You might also say, “Will I also lose that seven pounds?” and they would say, “But of course, my child!”
            That would be useful, but it isn’t how it is, which is why we sometimes plow on too long with things that aren’t making us happy, or give up too quickly on something that might yet work itself out, and it is often difficult to tell precisely which is which.
            A life lived forward can be a really irritating thing. So Nina thought, at any rate. Nina Redmond, twenty-nine, was telling herself not to cry in public. If you have ever tried giving yourself a good talking-to, you’ll know it doesn’t work terribly well. She was at work, for goodness’ sake. You weren’t meant to cry at work.
            She wondered if anyone else ever did. Then she wondered if maybe everyone did, even Cathy Neeson, with her stiff too-blond hair, and her thin mouth and her spreadsheets, who was right at this moment standing in a corner, watching the room with folded arms and a grim expression, after delivering to the small team Nina was a member of a speech filled with jargon about how there were cutbacks all over, and Birmingham couldn’t afford to maintain all its libraries, and how austerity was something they just had to get used to.
            Nina reckoned probably not. Some people just didn’t have a tear in them.
            (What Nina didn’t know was that Cathy Neeson cried on the way to work, on the way home from work—after eight o’clock most nights—every time she laid someone off, every time she was asked to shave another few percent off an already skeleton budget, every time she was ordered to produce some new quality relevant paperwork, and every time her boss dumped a load of administrative work on her at four o’clock on a Friday afternoon on his way to a skiing vacation, of which he took many.
            Eventually she ditched the entire thing and went and worked in a National Trust gift shop for a fifth of the salary and half the hours and none of the tears. But this story is not about Cathy Neeson.)
            It was just, Nina thought, trying to squash down the lump in her throat . . . it was just that they had been such a little library.
            Children’s story time Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Early closing Wednesday afternoon. A shabby old-fashioned building with tatty linoleum floors. A little musty sometimes, it was true. The big dripping radiators could take a while to get going of a morning and then would become instantly too warm, with a bit of a fug, particularly off old Charlie Evans, who came in to keep warm and read the Morning Star cover to cover, very slowly. She wondered where the Charlie Evanses of the world would go now.
            Cathy Neeson had explained that they were going to compress the library services into the center of town, where they would become a “hub,” with a “multimedia experience zone” and a coffee shop and an “intersensory experience,” whatever that was, even though town was at least two bus trips too far for most of their elderly or strollered-up clientele.
            Their lovely, tatty, old pitched-roof premises were being sold off to become executive apartments that would be well beyond the reach of a librarian’s salary. And Nina Redmond, twenty-nine, bookworm, with her long tangle of auburn hair, her pale skin with freckles dotted here and there, and a shyness that made her blush—or want to burst into tears—at the most inopportune moments, was, she got the feeling, going to be thrown out into the cold winds of a world that was getting a lot of unemployed librarians on the market at the same time.
            “So,” Cathy Neeson had concluded, “you can pretty much get started on packing up the ‘books’ right away.”
            She said “books” like it was a word she found distasteful in her shiny new vision of Mediatech Services. All those grubby, awkward books.

Nina dragged herself into the back room with a heavy heart and a slight redness around her eyes. Fortunately, everyone else looked more or less the same way. Old Rita O’Leary, who should probably have retired about a decade ago but was so kind to their clientele that everyone overlooked the fact that she couldn’t see the numbers on the Dewey Decimal System anymore and filed more or less at random, had burst into floods, and Nina had been able to cover up her own sadness comforting her.
            “You know who else did this?” hissed her colleague Griffin through his straggly beard as she made her way through. Griffin was casting a wary look at Cathy Neeson, still out in the main area as he spoke. “The Nazis. They packed up all the books and threw them onto bonfires.”
            “They’re not throwing them onto bonfires!” said Nina. “They’re not actually Nazis.”
            “That’s what everyone thinks. Then before you know it, you’ve got Nazis.”
With breathtaking speed, there’d been a sale, of sorts, with most of their clientele leafing through old familiar favorites in the ten pence box and leaving the shinier, newer stock behind.
            Now, as the days went on, they were meant to be packing up the rest of the books to ship them to the central library, but Griffin’s normally sullen face was looking even darker than usual. He had a long, unpleasantly scrawny beard, and a scornful attitude toward people who didn’t read the books he liked. As the only books he liked were obscure 1950s out-of-print stories about frustrated young men who drank too much in Fitzrovia, that gave him a lot of time to hone his attitude. He was still talking about book burners.
            “They won’t get burned! They’ll go to the big place in town.”
            Nina couldn’t bring herself to even say Mediatech.
            Griffin snorted. “Have you seen the plans? Coffee, computers, DVDs, plants, admin offices, and people doing cost–benefit analysis and harassing the unemployed—sorry, running ‘mindfulness workshops.’ There isn’t room for a book in the whole damn place.” He gestured at the dozens of boxes. “This will be landfill. They’ll use it to make roads.”
            “They won’t!”
            “They will! That’s what they do with dead books, didn’t you know? Turn them into underlay for roads. So great big cars can roll over the top of centuries of thought and ideas and scholarship, metaphorically stamping a love of learning into the dust with their stupid big tires and blustering Top Gear idiots killing
the planet.”
            “You’re not in the best of moods this morning, are you, Griffin?”
            “Could you two hurry it along a bit over there?” said Cathy Neeson, bustling in, sounding anxious. They only had the budget for the collection trucks for one afternoon; if they didn’t manage to load everything up in time, she’d be in serious trouble.
            “Yes, Commandant Über-Führer,” said Griffin under his breath as she bustled out again, her blond bob still rigid. “God, that woman is so evil it’s unbelievable.”
            But Nina wasn’t listening. She was looking instead in despair at the thousands of volumes around her, so hopeful with their beautiful covers and optimistic blurbs. To condemn any of them to waste disposal seemed heartbreaking: these were books! To Nina it was like closing down an animal shelter. And there was no way they were going to get it all done today, no matter what Cathy Neeson thought.
            Which was how, six hours later, when Nina’s Mini Metro pulled up in front of the front door of her tiny shared house, it was completely and utterly stuffed with volumes.

My Review:

I have read the plot of this book and I was really fascinated: find a librarian  who knows how to pair each person with the right book is the dream of every reader! I loved every single page of this book, was really adorable, charming, intriguing, sometimes moving but with several funny twists.
Nina has a dream to open a library of her own but she will not be a librarian like the others, she loves to find a soul mate bookish of each reader. When she is fired and thrown out of home by her roommate, she finds the perfect opportunity to fulfill her wish. There is in Scotland a really affordable caravan: she may open a mobile library.  She will face many adventures in order to fulfill her dream. Will she build a new and happy life?
It's written really well, the author is very good at capturing the attention of the reader: I read it in one breath, I could not put it down. For all the bookworms will easily empathize with Nina, I would love to open a library or working in the world of books .... The male characters are perfect, it's really hard to choose one between Marek and Lennox. I loved the final.
If you love romances about books, Scotland and funny and romantic stories this  is a must read

Review & Giveaway: Running On Empty by Meg Benjamin

Running On Empty
by Meg Benjamin

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Ronnie Ventura has every reason to distrust Fairstein Productions: she’s had run-ins with their shows before. But Fairstein’s newest reality show offers Ronnie a chance to redeem herself from looking like a blonde bimbo. All she has to do is win a modified triathlon. Simple, right? Except this is Fairstein, and nothing is ever simple with them.

Ronnie’s boss at the Blarney Stone bar and café, owner Ted Saltzman, is a lot less convinced that another Fairstein show is just what Ronnie needs, particularly when he’s head over heels about Ronnie himself.  But she’s determined, and he’s a man in love.

Ted becomes her running coach, which fans their budding romance to a fever. But can Ronnie’s newfound confidence stand up to the usual Fairstein plots? And can Ted find a way to keep his true love in Salt Box if Hollywood tries to steal her away again?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My Review:
 few months ago I have read the first book in this series and I was very curious to see a story with a protagonist that I had found a little irritating, Ronnie. She's changed a lot and it was enjoyable to be with her.
Ronnie is a veteran of a reality show, when the show was over she has asked Ted for a job in Blarney Stone and he has hired her as a waitress. She has the chance to change her life and he has increased his customers, many are curious to know the star of the TV. But spending more and more time together will be difficult to hide the strong attraction that exists between them.
The Blarney Stone is a welcoming and peaceful retreat in a quiet town of Colorado, Salt Box, I spent a great time in this city with its colorful characters
The characters are well developed and very realistic, are people I would like to know.
It's the third and final book of the trilogy Salt Box but can be read as a standalone, the author is very good at providing the essential information of the characters already known in earlier books
It was a truly engaging and delightful read, well written with a few but very sexy scenes. It kept my attention the entire time.
Highly recommended for those who love romance
EXCERPT:
She turned to look at him full on, her eyes like brown velvet. His pulse kicked up a few hundred beats.
“Would you like me to go with you tomorrow? As your trainer?” He held her gaze for a long moment.
She shook her head, her lips moving up in a slight smile. “No. Thanks, but no. This is my problem, and I’m going to deal with it.”
His hand moved to the side of her face, almost without any conscious design on his part. Her skin felt like satin, soft and warm. Velvet eyes, satin skin, a smile like…Ronnie. He didn’t have any metaphors for that. He rubbed his thumb across her upper lip, feeling it pucker slightly beneath his touch.
His cock was straining, heat throbbing in his veins. She’s vulnerable. Don’t take advantage of her, you jerk.
Ronnie stared at him wide-eyed, almost like a child. Defenseless, exposed. Leave her alone.
And then she moved forward swiftly, bringing her hands to the sides of his face, and kissed him.
For a moment he was too astonished to do anything except kiss her back. His brain seemed to be cloaked in a red haze of lust. He drank in her scent, that mixture of Salt Box and the Blarney Stone, sweet willows and malty beer, that added to the aroma of pine sap and ancient wood smoke that seemed to linger around his cabin.
He pulled back slightly, staring into those great brown eyes, the color of cinnamon coffee now. Then he bent his head, running his lips in a line along her throat, to the joining of neck and shoulder.
Review & Giveaway: The General's Wife by Sara R. Turnquist
The General's Wife
by Sara R. Turnquist
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Historical Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
“Go home!” Ismene is speechless as she reads those words written in blood on the walls of her new home. The young, raven-haired Grecian beauty had traveled all the way from her homeland to marry the Pharaoh’s top general. But she never expected this. The hatred of the Alexandrian mob for their Greek rulers is right in front of her. It is the first of many threats she will receive.
Things are escalating out of control. Damaged crops and horses turned loose at night are one thing. But when Ismene receives a death threat, it becomes clear that there is a spy within her own household. She would turn to her husband to deal with this issue, except he left for battle by order of the Pharaoh. Not knowing whom to trust, she fears for her safety as well as the entire ruling class of Egypt.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

My Review:

I'm very fascinated by this historical period but I've read a few books set in this era. As soon as I discovered this book I couldn't wait to read it and didn't disappoint me. It 's a very romantic story with an excellent historical reconstruction. It also allowed me to make a virtual visit to the legendary Library of Alexandria ...
Ismene has had to leave her beloved homeland, Greece, to go and live in Egypt and marry a general who worked for Pharaoh, Alistair. Her father  has combined this marriage and she can not help but accept. Alistair treats her like a queen but the Egyptian people don't accept her, indeed threaten her. Is the life of Ismene in danger? Will Alistair be able to protect her? Will their arranged marriage  turn into a love marriage?
I really like Ismene, she is a strong woman, determined, often stubborn. Alistair is good and kind to her and do anything to protect her. They are a lovely couple and I loved seeing change their feelings.
It 's a clean novel, well written and very addictive, a total page turner, once you start it's really hard to put it down. There are many twists and action, it's good mix of romance and "mystery".
I recommend it to those who love historical romances, in particular taking place during the greek rule in Egypt.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“Can you please take this blindfold off?” Ismene loved surprises, but couldn't stand the waiting. Alistair had risen early to prepare a special breakfast for them and served her in bed. Then he had told her that he had something special planned for them today—a special place for them to visit.
“Not yet,” Alistair said as he gripped her waist. Their chariot went over a bump which caused him to pull her to him even more tightly. She smiled at the feel of his secure embrace; even after this short time it still caused butterflies in her stomach.
She felt the chariot continue to move down the smooth path with a little rocking here and there as the wheels found imperfections in the road.
“We're almost there, I promise,” he assured her. His voice was close to her ear and it gave her warm chills. She thought of the feel of those lips on her neck. There wasn't much time to daydream, though, because, true to his word, it wasn't much longer before she felt him slow the horses and still the chariot.
“Ready for your surprise?” he asked.
“Yes!” She feigned exasperation.
Only then did he reach up, untie her blindfold, and let it fall. “The great Library of Alexandria.”
Sonar the Surge
by B. Truly
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:  New Adult Sci fi Romance

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Eclipsed by darkness, the Romelands must face the ultimate quest. If they are forced toward the umbra peak, they will be completely obscured.
Symone must travel through the opaque light in order to find where her destiny lies.
Symone’s family, Shiray and Syira, continue to fight in the feuds of their galaxy. Together they have to find the balance between compassion and sacrifice. Kadanans are being held captive, and they hold the fate of their world in their hands. They have only begun to understand the consequences of the devastating realities of war.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend, is the philosophy the Romelands now abide by. With chaos and turmoil at every corner, they may forget what is worth fighting for. The surge for power has erupted. Only the strongest race will be left standing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My Review:

It 's a sci-fi really intriguing, different from other books of this genre that I have read. There's action, war  but also romance, family, loyalty.
While in the galaxy is still ongoing the war, Symone must try to understand her heart. She's very attracted by Nile, he's not so arrogant as she thought, he even has risked his life for her. But she still thinks of her lost love. Will she let herself  go?
All of the characters are very likeable and the various love stories are very sweet and romantic.
It's the third and final book in the series, can be read as stand alone but for a more engaging reading I recommend reading the series in order to be able to see the characters grow
The plot is very original, complex, well-developed and flowes very well, is really an easy read. Excellent idea of telling the story alternating the point of view of all the female characters.
For those who love to discover other worlds and alien races this is a great read.

EXCERPT:

Chapter 8

* * * Symone * * *

I got my wish over the next few weeks. I spent a ton of time with sweet Nile. His excuse was that I was his new apprentice in regard to ships. He didn’t need a reason, but I was glad we had one. It made it easier for us to pretend … for me, anyway.

Late one evening, Nile and I were in his bedroom. He shut his computer down. Then came over and sat next to me on the sofa in his sitting area. As he did, a pillow fell on the floor. He leaned down to pick it up, and grazed my side on his way up. I giggled. His hazels grew mischievous.

“You’re ticklish?”

“Very.”

Nile reached over to graze my side again. I giggled more. “Your laugh is adorable.”

I leaned back, putting my arms up in self-defense. “You wouldn’t.”

He beamed. “Oh, yeah, I would.” He attacked, using both hands to tickle me silly. I fell on my back, kicking, unable to defend myself. He was so much bigger than me. I went into hysterics. I hadn’t been tickled like this since I was a child. He pinned me down and continued to torture me.

“Nile … please … stop!” He finally did and had somehow ended up between my legs. His mouth parted. I tried to play it off. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“I can’t help it. You’re so gorgeous.”

We leaned toward each other at the same time, our lips locked. Since our first flight training, we had only shared timid, quick kisses. But this kiss was explosive. I moaned as he entangled his hands in my hair. Having a dress on was dangerous territory. As he lowered himself on top of me, it rose to my hips. Nile groaned as I gripped his bottom tighter. It only egged him on. He began to move slowly in between my legs. I gasped because I could feel all of him moving against me. Nile glided his tongue across my neck. I jerked as sensations flared through me. Was I really ready to cross this line? At this rate, it wouldn’t be long before my train of thought vanished. And I wouldn’t be able to stop. I had been intimate before. But I wanted the next man I slept with to be the one I would marry. Fate was so cruel. I’d been with the man I thought I would marry, only to lose him. I didn’t think I could open my heart again so life could crush it with despair. The realization that I could lose Nile made my chest
tighten. I froze. He pulled back.

“Symone, what’s wrong?”

I could only imagine the expression of horror on my face. I bit my lip. We both sat up as I pulled my dress down.

“I’m sorry if I moved too fast.”

“No, it’s not that.”

He rubbed my cheek and forced me to look at him. “Tell me, please?”

“It’s just that…” I broke from his grasp and shook my head. How did I tell him I seemed to lose everyone I cared about? I was cursed, because my loved ones were hurt or killed when they were with me.

Nile sighed. “Is this about your ex-suitor, your feelings toward him?”

“It’s about him in a sense.”

“What does that mean?” He balled his hands into fists.

“I will always care about him.”

Nile’s nostrils flared and he turned away. “Why did you kiss me back the first time? Why do you continue to spend time with me?”
